What you can do…

You’ve heard the old saying, “Freedom isn’t free.”  Well, it’s true.

Few recall that our Founding Fathers, the people who signed the Declaration of Independence, put everything at risk.  Unlike today’s politicians, most of whom run for office only to enrich themselves, our Founding Fathers pledged their fortunes, their land, their very lives for the dream of securing the blessings of liberty for themselves and their posterity.

The odds of winning independence through armed conflict against one of the most powerful nations of that time were quite small.  And, for the most part, the leaders of this effort were not peasants with nothing to lose.  Instead, they were successful people: merchants; lawyers; landed gentry; professionals.  But each one of them believed in founding a free nation to the extent that they were willing to sacrifice their wealth, their status and even their lives to throw off the yoke of oppression.

But today, those same freedoms are at risk as never before.  In the name of national security, our government has authorized warrantless search and seizures; torture; illegal wiretapping; even arrest and detainment without the benefit of a trial.

In less than a decade, our government has eliminated many of the freedoms that generations of Americans had taken for granted.

What you and every citizen can and must do is to question authority and push back against such abuses of our Constitutional freedoms before it is too late.

Yes, we believe in national security.  Yes, we recognize that America has enemies throughout the world.  But this does not justify our government’s assault on our liberties.

Throughout history, despots have used these very same tactics to enslave entire populations.  Benjamin Franklin once said, “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty or safety.  Nor, are they likely to end up with either.”
